The Gobi Gear SegSac
A brilliant innovation that will change the way you pack…everything.
See if this sounds familiar… You carefully pack your stuff sack with all of the essentials and head out for adventure. The first time you stop and open it you push clothes from side to side, peering into the bag looking for that one piece of gear you need. After scrambling your stuff you start taking everything out, piece by piece, until you finally get to what you were looking for. You probably didn’t even realize this was a problem until the Gobi Gear SegSac came along.
Here’s an example of a simple improvement to a piece of gear everyone owns, the stuff sack, that completely changes it in ways you never thought of.
Overview: A brilliant new twist on an old product that has 1001 uses and actually makes packing easier.
The Good: Practical, versatile and well made.
The Bad: Horrible name

By sewing partitions inside the bag, Gobi Gear created four compartments making it easy to organize your gear and get what you need faster. People are using it to organize a few days worth of clothes for a camping trip, hammock and tent components, dog toys, kids toys, daily workout clothes, medical supplies and even produce at the grocery store.
Here’s a great graphic from the Gobi Gear website explaining how the SegSac works.
Great for Outdoor and Everyday Adventures
They took a standard stuff sack and made it 100 times more useful.
Originally designed for the outdoorsman who wanted a better way to pack hiking and camping gear, the Gobi Gear SegSac quickly became popular with anyone wanting to pack smarter and keep their things separated. You see them everywhere… at the gym, farmers market, beach, dog park even the backseat of the minivan.
We purchased the 15L model and tested it out, first packing it with a weekends worth of clothes for a fishing trip. Three segments were packed with a roll of shorts/shirts/underwear/socks for each day, and the forth with odds and ends. Every morning clean clothes came out, dirty clothes went in and the two never came in contact. There was no rummaging or scrambling the bag! It sounds so simplistic but it really does make it much easier to pack and unpack.
The same bag has become my daily carry for gym clothes. Each compartment filled with t-shirt, shorts, sneakers and my favorite water bottle from Bear Grylls. Simple and easy! After using it, I can see what it’s become so popular for carrying just about anything.
Built to Last
This is really the only place a bag like this can fail. If it isn’t well made and rips, tears or otherwise wears out, it’s of no use to you. Fortunately, the SegSac is overbuilt with heavy stitching on the seams including the inner segments, drawstring and bottom.
Built entirely of 30 Denier Ripstop Cordura they’ve kind of overdone it in the durability column. It’s tough to tear or rip this thing but the fabric is thin enough to give a little when you really want to stuff it.
Sizes and Colors
The Gobi Gear SegSac comes in four colors; Blue, Larkspur (the reddish one), Grey and Solstice (the green one)…
…and four sizes; 15L (15″ high x 9″ across or slightly larger than a shoebox), 20L (17″ x 11″), 25L and 30L.
What Didn’t We Like About the Gobi Gear SegSac?
Gobi Gear made a great bag, but the name is terrible.
Good reviews are balanced reviews and cover all aspects of a product. This one was tough, it was hard to find a problem with the SegSac. It’s a brilliant concept that’s versatile and well made, but the name is awful! The Seg Sac? It sounds like some sort of growth, medical condition or something more perverse. I don’t even like saying it out loud in public. They could have done better. Of course, this is my own little quirk and certainly doesn’t take away from the quality of the product… but still bugs me.
Wrap Up
My Gobi Gear SegSac has gotten daily use for the past 6 months as both my weekday gym bag and my weekend gear organizer. I never thought a stuff sac could be improved upon to the point that it would be so useful in so many situations. So far no seam has frayed or torn, the fabric hasn’t ripped and the drawstring works perfectly. You can’t ask for much more!

Other Gobi Gear Worth Checking Out
The Hobo Roll and the SegSac Compression
Gobi Gear originally launched with a Kickstarter campaign for their Hobo Roll. A segmented stuff sack with a drawstring closure on both ends, a compression system and a shoulder strap. It was incredibly successful (and later renamed The SegSac Traveler) and became a popular daytripper. It comes in several colors and sizes and sells for between $39.99 and $46.99.

When pack space is at a premium, Gobi Gear has the SegSac Compress, which is just a SegSac with a top/bottom compression system. It works great for packing clothes into the smallest space possible. If you are an ultralighter or even a day hiker that just likes a small pack this is a great option.
